🪨 1. Natural Formation of Limestone

  • Origin: Limestone is a sedimentary rock that forms over millions of years.

  • Main ingredient: Calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) – mostly from the remains of marine organisms like shells, corals, and algae.

  • Formation process:

    • These remains settle on ocean floors.

    • Over time, they get compressed and hardened under pressure and layers of sediment.

    • This forms large limestone beds or deposits.

⛏️ 2. Quarrying (Extraction)

  • Location: Limestone is found in open-pit quarries or underground mines.

  • Process:

    • Land is surveyed for limestone reserves.

    • Surface is stripped, and rock is loosened using drilling and controlled blasting.

    • Large limestone blocks are cut and transported.

🪓 3. Primary Crushing

  • Purpose: Break large boulders into smaller pieces.

  • Machines like jaw crushers or impact crushers are used.

  • Result: Rough gravel or crushed stone form.

🧹 4. Screening and Washing

  • The crushed limestone is:

    • Screened to separate different sizes.

    • Washed to remove dust, clay, or impurities.

  • Now it’s ready for various uses or further refining.

🔥 5. Calcination (if needed for lime products)

  • Crushed limestone is heated in a kiln at around 900–1000°C.

  • This drives off carbon dioxide (CO₂), leaving quicklime (CaO).

  • Used in:

    • Cement

    • Steel

    • Agriculture

🏭 6. Further Processing (Finishing Products)

Depending on the end-use, limestone can be turned into:

🧱 Construction Materials

  • Crushed stone for road base, concrete, asphalt.

  • Dimension stone (cut blocks or slabs) for walls, flooring, facades.

🧪 Industrial Use

  • Ground into powdered limestone (also called calcium carbonate powder).

    • Used in plastics, paints, rubber, glass, fertilizers.

🧬 Lime Products

  • Quicklime (CaO) → treated with water = slaked lime (Ca(OH)₂).

    • Used in water treatment, mortar, paper, and sugar refining.

🛒 7. Packaging & Delivery

  • Final products are:

    • Bagged or bulk packed (powder)

    • Cut and polished (tiles, slabs)

    • Loaded onto trucks or containers for delivery to customers or construction sites.
